"Celebrate Our Own Series", Blondean Davis

Program February 7: Dr. Blondean Y. Davis, "Celebrating Our Own"

CEO, Southland Charter College Preparatory High School

Dr. Blondean Y. Davis is recognized for her vision and leadership in raising student achievement levels and in the reform of education.

“I believe that every child has a right to learn and can achieve the 21st century skills needed for success—to think critically and to problem solve,” she states.
Dr. Davis holds that “children can achieve their highest potential to learn, despite socioeconomic realities that are often cited as insurmountable barriers to achieving optimal educational results.”
The former Chief of Schools and Regions of Chicago Public Schools from 1995 to 2001, where she was responsible for the daily management of seven regions and 601 schools, Dr. Davis joined Matteson School District 162 as Superintendent in 2002.
At the time, only 55 percent of the district’s students met or exceeded the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) proficiency goals. Today, the District is the only one of Illinois’ 870 school districts that has an enrollment of 50 percent or higher poverty level and an African-American student population of at least 40 percent, with 82 percent or more of its students scoring at or above state standards.  http://www.greatschools.org/cgi-bin/il/district-profile/677#standards
In 2010, after less than a year of planning, in the belief that the area’s students needed a choice and hope for their future, Dr. Davis spearheaded the launch of a new charter high school to serve at risk students in nine southwest Chicago suburban communities. Southland Charter College Preparatory High School, which opened in temporary quarters in August of 2010, is the first charter public high school approved by the Illinois State Board of Education in Chicago suburbs.
Dr. Davis serves as the CEO, without compensation, of the new charter school that has a comprehensive educational program that is both creative and rigorous. Opened in temporary quarters in August of 2010, the charter high school moved into a newly remodeled building in Richton Park in April of 2011.
By the Fall of 2013, the new charter high school will meet its enrollment cap of 500 students set by the Illinois State Board of Education. It has a 25:1 pupil teacher ratio, an extended school day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and an emphasis on foreign languages and the arts. The new charter school, “is designed to prepare all of its graduates for academic success in college,” says Dr. Davis.
Named the Superintendent of the Year in 2008 by the Illinois Association of School Administrators, Dr. Davis believes that the future of urban education depends on quality leadership that requires dedication, cooperation and acceptance of new levels of responsibility by administrators, principals, faculties, parents, students and community leaders to produce a true learning community.
In 2009, one of the District’s seven elementary schools, Arcadia, was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
A product of Englewood High School on the south side of Chicago, Dr. Davis earned bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees in education from Loyola University Chicago. She began her educational career as a Chicago Public School teacher and counselor and later served as assistant principal, principal, district superintendent until her appointment as Deputy Chief Education Officer of the Chicago Public School system.
Immediately prior to joining District 162, Dr. Davis was associate professorial lecturer at Saint Xavier University where she trained prospective school principals. She has served as a senior consultant to the Illinois State Board of Education.
The first woman president of a Phi Delta Kappa chapter, Dr. Davis has received numerous honors and awards for her service to education, including:
Whitman Award of Excellence in Educational Management
Reader’s Digest American Heroes in Education Award
Chicago Assistant Principal Association Distinguished Service Award in Education
    Mercedes Mentor Award
Kathy Osterman Award for Superior Public Service
Frederick Patterson United Negro College Fund Outstanding Service Award
    Par Excellence in Education Award
    Diversity Inc. Award for Leadership
Damen Award of Loyola University Chicago
    James Edwin Stamps Memorial Award
Gavin Image Award
Dr. Davis has served as chairperson for numerous charitable campaigns and has helped to raise more than $ 8 million for the United Negro College Fund. She is a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators, the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Advisory Board, Phi Delta Kappa and Rotary One Chicago.
She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Park Zoo.
Dr. Davis holds a Doctor of Humane Letters from Governors State University and is a member of the Governors State Foundation Board.
