Partnering with Rotarians to Build Peace
In 2018, Kathleen Doherty was awarded the Rotary Peace Fellowship and completed an extensive program on peace and conflict studies at the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. She has received multiple awards, most recently in 2019, Kathleen was awarded the Rotary Positive Peace Activator Award by Rotary International/Institute of Economics & Peace and the Institute of Economics & Peace Global Ambassador Award.
Kathleen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and a Certified Domestic Violence Professional (ICDVP) serving as the head of the Gender Unit at LeMaiyan Hospital in Kitengela, Kenya. She is currently located in Berwyn, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, building a 501(c)(3) organization to support the hospital after creating the Gender Violence Recovery Unit in Kenya. The unit coordinates screening, intervention, and prevention for individuals experiencing sexual/gender-based violence. Kathleen comes from an extensive and accomplished background in non-profits focused on the consultation and prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Beginning as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Ivory Coast and working her way up to serve as Executive Director of the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network (Network), Kathleen has led NGO’s in ending gender-based violence through advocacy and policy initiatives, the medical programming, training, research, and prevention and intervention programs her entire career.
Kathleen also has professional certificates in Unarmed Civilian Protection from Nonviolence Peaceforce, and Mediation Skills Training from Northwestern University.
